Passage: The Sandwich Story
When you are hungry and need something quick to eat, what do you choose? Many people around the world love sandwiches. A sandwich is easy to make, easy to carry, and can be eaten anywhere — at school, work, or a picnic. You just need two slices of bread and something tasty inside, like cheese, meat, eggs, or vegetables.
A Short History of the Sandwich
The sandwich got its name from an English man called John Montagu, the Earl of Sandwich, in the 18th century. It is said that he loved to play cards for many hours. One day, he asked his servant to bring him meat between two slices of bread so he could eat and play at the same time. Other people liked the idea and started asking for “the same as Sandwich,” and soon, the sandwich became popular.
Today, sandwiches are eaten all over the world. In France, people enjoy baguette sandwiches with ham and butter. In Turkey, there is döner kebab in flatbread. In Mexico, people eat tortas filled with meat, beans, and cheese. In Pakistan, chicken sandwiches are common in cafés and schools. No matter where you go, you can find a sandwich that suits your taste!
