Grammar Notes: Simple Present — Negatives and Questions
We use the simple present to talk about habits, routines, facts and things that are
always true. To make negative sentences and questions in the simple
present, we use the helping verbs do / does.
1. Negative Sentences
Use do not (don’t) with I, you, we, they and
does not (doesn’t) with he, she, it.
The main verb stays in the base form.
I don’t eat breakfast at school.
They don’t play football on Monday.
He doesn’t watch TV in the morning.
It doesn’t rain a lot in the desert.
2. Yes/No Questions
Put Do or Does at the beginning of the sentence.
The main verb stays in the base form. Use Do with I, you, we, they and
Does with he, she, it.
Do you like online classes?
Do they live near the university?
Does she work on Fridays?
Does he drive to school?
3. Wh- Questions
For Wh- questions (What, Where, When, Why, How), we put the question word first,
then Do / Does, then the subject and base verb.
Where do you study?
What time does the class start?
Why do they visit the library?
How does he go to work?
4. Common Mistakes
❌ He doesn’t plays tennis. ✅ He doesn’t play tennis.
