Rules for Comparatives and Superlatives
For short one-syllable words, add -er for the comparative and -est for the superlative: tall, taller, tallest. Most two-syllable words and all longer words use more/most instead: more careful, most careful; more expensive, most expensive. A handful of common adjectives are irregular and simply have to be memorized — good/better/best, bad/worse/worst, far/farther (or further)/farthest (or furthest).
Comparatives always compare exactly two things and are usually followed by ‘than’: ‘This book is more interesting than that one.’ Superlatives compare three or more things (or one thing against everything else in its category) and are almost always preceded by ‘the’: ‘This is the most interesting book I’ve read all year.’ Mixing these up — using a superlative to compare only two items, for example — is one of the most common mistakes on comparatives and superlatives quizzes like this one.
