Passage: Climate Change and Our Choices

People often talk about climate change and global warming, but what do these words really mean? The Earth has a natural “blanket” of gases around it called greenhouse gases. These gases keep our planet warm enough for people, plants, and animals to live. Without this blanket, the Earth would be too cold for us.

Today, many human activities are adding extra greenhouse gases to the air. When we burn oil, gas, and coal for cars, factories, and electricity, we send more carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This makes the Earth warmer. As a result, some places have stronger heat waves, heavier rain, or more serious storms than before.

In Saudi Arabia, people already know what hot weather feels like. Summers can be very long and very hot. Climate change may make these hot days even more extreme, and some areas may get sudden heavy rain that can cause flooding. This can be dangerous for people who live near the coast or in low areas of the city.

The good news is that we can all help. At home, we can save electricity by turning off lights, air conditioners, TVs, and computers when we are not using them. We can choose energy-saving bulbs and try to walk or share a car when possible. These small actions may seem simple, but together they can help to reduce the harmful effects of climate change and protect our planet for future generations.
