The verb “be” is very common in English. We use it to talk about names, jobs,
feelings, places, time, and more. Read the rules and examples, then try the interactive activities.
1. Present simple forms
In the present, the main forms of “be” are am, is, are.
I am (I’m) a student.
He / She / It is (he’s, she’s, it’s) in class.
You / We / They are (you’re, we’re, they’re) at home.
Example: We are in the English lab today.
It is a warm evening in Riyadh.
2. Contractions (short forms)
In spoken and informal written English, we often use short forms.
I am → I’m
you are → you’re
he is → he’s, she is → she’s, it is → it’s
we are → we’re, they are → they’re
Example: I’m from Jeddah and she’s from Doha.
3. Negatives with “be”
To make negative sentences, use am not / is not / are not.
We also use short forms.
I am not (I’m not) tired.
He is not (he isn’t / he’s not) in the office.
They are not (they aren’t / they’re not) ready.
Example: The café isn’t open yet, but the supermarket
is open.
4. Yes/No questions with “be”
In questions, the verb “be” comes before the subject.

Example: Is today a holiday? — No, it isn’t.
