A noun phrase is a group of words built around a noun. We often use it to describe
people, places, things, and ideas in more detail.
1. Basic noun phrase pattern
A common pattern is:
a / an / the + adjective + noun.
a warm spring
a quiet street
a small village
Example: Melbourne has a warm spring.
The noun phrase is a warm spring.
2. Noun phrases with plural or uncountable nouns
We sometimes use plural or uncountable nouns, and we may not use a / an.
very cold winters
high mountains
heavy rainfall
Example: Finland has very cold winters.
The noun phrase is very cold winters.
3. Noun phrases in sentences
A noun phrase can be the subject or the object of a sentence.
A rainy summer isn’t very nice. (subject)
People enjoy a clean city. (object)
Look for adjectives and nouns together. Ask: “Which group of words names a person, place,
thing, or idea?”
4. More than one adjective
A noun phrase can have more than one adjective before the noun.
a long, hot summer
a small, quiet town
Example: They walked through a long, quiet street.
