Grammar Notes: Present Simple for Simple Sentences
We use the present simple to talk about habits, routines, facts and things that are
generally true. It is one of the most common tenses in English and is perfect for writing clear,
simple sentences about everyday life.
1. Basic form
For most verbs, the present simple uses the base form of the verb:
I/you/we/they + base verb.
I study English every day.
They work in a big office.
We play football after school.
2. Third person singular (he, she, it)
With he, she, it, we usually add -s or -es
to the verb.
He plays tennis on Fridays.
She watches TV in the evening.
It rains a lot in winter.
Remember to change the verb when the subject is he, she, or it.
3. Negatives and questions
To make negatives and questions in the present simple, we use
do / does.
Negative: I do not (don’t) like cold coffee.
Negative: He does not (doesn’t) eat meat.
Question: Do you live near here?
Question: Does she work on Sundays?
4. Time expressions with present simple
We often use the present simple with time expressions that show habit
or routine.
Adverbs: always, usually, often, sometimes, never
Phrases: every day, on Mondays, at the weekend, in the morning
Example: She usually has breakfast at seven.
Present simple + time expression = clear simple sentence.
