Read these rules and examples based on Sara’s day. Then try the interactive activities on the right.

1. Regular Verbs (-ed)

Add -ed to the base verb for most regular verbs.

  • attend → attended
  • visit → visited
  • check → checked

Example: Sara attended her morning lecture.

2. Verbs ending in “y”

Change y → i and add -ed.

  • study → studied

Example: She studied for her upcoming exams.

3. Irregular Verbs

These verbs do not follow a pattern. You must memorize them.

  • go → went
  • have → had
  • eat → ate
  • meet → met

Example: Yesterday, Sara went to the university early.

4. Negative Form

Use did not + base verb.

  • understand → did not understand

Example: She asked questions when she did not understand something.
