This Unit 8 transport vocabulary set focuses on words and phrases you need to talk about how people travel and get around a city. Work through the slides above, then use the key terms and example sentences below to practice using each word in context before moving on to Vocabulary 2.
Key Transport Vocabulary
- Commute – to travel regularly between home and work or school. Example: Many people commute by train into the city every morning.
- Public transport – buses, trains, and other vehicles that anyone can use for a fare. Example: Public transport is often cheaper and more eco-friendly than driving.
- Traffic jam – a line of vehicles that cannot move, or moves very slowly. Example: We were stuck in a traffic jam for over an hour.
- Pedestrian – a person walking rather than travelling in a vehicle. Example: The city added a new pedestrian crossing near the school.
- Fare – the money you pay to travel on a bus, train, or taxi. Example: The bus fare increased by fifty cents this year.
- Vehicle – a machine, usually with wheels or an engine, used for transporting people or goods. Example: Electric vehicles are becoming more common on city streets.
