Grammar Notes: Nouns and Verbs

Every complete sentence needs at least one noun and one verb. A noun usually names a person, place, thing, or idea. A verb usually shows an action or a state. In this lesson you will identify nouns and verbs in simple sentences.

1. What is a noun?

A noun is a word for a person, place, thing, or idea.

  • People: student, teacher, Ahmed
  • Places: Riyadh, library, classroom
  • Things: phone, notebook, chair
  • Ideas: happiness, time, confidence

Example: The student is in the library. (student, library = nouns)

2. What is a verb?

A verb is a word that shows an action or a state (how something is).

  • Action verbs: study, read, write, play, travel
  • State verbs: am, is, are, feel, seem

Example: The students study every evening. (study = verb)

3. Where are nouns and verbs in a sentence?

In many basic English sentences, the noun comes before the verb: Noun + verb + (other words).

  • Omar drives to college.
  • The teacher speaks slowly.
  • My phone is on the desk.

Tip: To find the verb, ask: “What is happening?” or “What does the subject do?”

4. One word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb in another

Some words can be both nouns and verbs, depending on how we use them.

  • Noun: I have a long walk to college.
  • Verb: I walk to college every day.
  • Noun: The plan is on the board.
  • Verb: We plan our project together.

Always look at the sentence to decide if a word is working as a noun or a verb.
