Every complete sentence needs at least one noun and one verb.
A noun usually names a person, place, thing, or idea. A verb usually shows an action or a state.
In this lesson you will identify nouns and verbs in simple sentences.
1. What is a noun?
A noun is a word for a person, place, thing, or idea.
People: student, teacher, Ahmed
Places: Riyadh, library, classroom
Things: phone, notebook, chair
Ideas: happiness, time, confidence
Example: The student is in the library.
(student, library = nouns)
2. What is a verb?
A verb is a word that shows an action or a state (how something is).
Action verbs: study, read, write, play, travel
State verbs: am, is, are, feel, seem
Example: The students study every evening. (study = verb)
3. Where are nouns and verbs in a sentence?
In many basic English sentences, the noun comes before the verb:
Noun + verb + (other words).
Omardrives to college.
The teacherspeaks slowly.
My phoneis on the desk.
Tip: To find the verb, ask: “What is happening?” or “What does the subject do?”
4. One word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb in another
Some words can be both nouns and verbs, depending on how we use them.
Noun: I have a long walk to college.
Verb: I walk to college every day.
Noun: The plan is on the board.
Verb: We plan our project together.
Always look at the sentence to decide if a word is working as a noun or a verb.
